SANParks honorary ranger Grant Melville will attempt a non-stop hike on 21-22 September, from Zinkwazi main beach in KwaZulu-Natal to Umhlanga Rocks, covering the 70km in 24 hours.
The hike will end on World Rhino Day (22 Spetember) and all funds raised will go towards the SANParks anti-poaching K9 Units, which have made a significant contribution to the protecting rhinos from poachers.

The KZN Region of the SANPArks Honorary Rangers is inviting members of the public to participate in the event, which has been dubbed the ‘OLLI Zink-Rox Beach Challenge’.
Here’s how you can support, the important work that the K9 anti-poaching units do:
-
- Join in the 2019 International Coastal Beach Clean Up organised by the Uvemvane Tugela Honorary Officers at Blythedale beach from 8-12am.
- Meet Grant and the SANParks Honorary Rangers at the Salt Rock Beach Hotel, 59 Basil Hulett Drive in Salt Rock on 21 September from 2–4 pm and visit the SANParks Honorary Rangers Public Education and Awareness Project (PEAP) display, showcasing items of interest from our national parks.
- Hike 1.5 km alongside Grant from Salt Rock to Chaka’s Rock tidal pool and participate in the International Coastal Clean-Up on 21 September at 3pm. Trash bags will be provided and SANParks Honorary Rangers will collect your bags at the Chaka’s Rock Tidal pool at Ocean Drive across from Salt Cafe.
- Register your OLLI move for rhino here or join the OLLI Club on the (free) STRAVA app.
- Welcome Grant back and cheer for rhino at the OLLI ZINK-ROX finish line on World Rhino Day 22 September at around 9 am at the Durban View parking lot next to Malindi Apartments on Durban View Road in Umhlanga Rocks.
- Make a donation to the SANParks Honorary Rangers by contacting [email protected]. Proceeds will go towards the SANParks anti-poaching K9 Units, which have contributed significantly to the protection of our rhinos against poachers.
If you are not in KwaZulu-Natal, you can still show your support through the OLLI movement, a coordinated world ride, run, swim or any activity, recorded on the STRAVA app, in support of the world’s rhino and other endangered species. People can show their support by logging their activity of any distance on World Rhino Day 22 September 2019. #JointCustody #OLLI #OLLIMOVE
