A Chinese theme park has sparked international fury after videos on social media showed two of its workers forcing a pig to bungee jump from a 68-metre-high tower. The video footage shows the pig tied to a pole before being pushed off.
The theme park can be found in Chongqing, and stated that the stunt was held to launch the new bungee jumping attraction. According to reports by Chinese media, the pig was slaughtered after the stunt.
Animal rights organisation PETA was spitting mad when it heard of the incident, calling it animal cruelty at its very worst.
“We sincerely accept netizens’ criticism and advice and apologise to the public,” the theme park said in a statement. “We will improve marketing of the tourist site, to provide tourists with better services.”
In the video, the pig can be seen being pushed off the tower with a purple cape draped around its neck. It is estimated to have weighed 75 kilograms, and it can clearly be heard squealing. Some social media users have said they see nothing wrong with the stunt, and said there is no difference between this and ‘killing a pig for food’.
Animal cruelty is not punishable by law in China. However, there has been a growing awareness of animal welfare issues in recent years.
