A global survey by Skytrax, known as the World Airport Awards, has revealed the top 10 innovative and impressive airports worldwide that offer the best travelling experience.
According to the report, to be a contender for the best airports, an airport must constantly be improving and striving to bring its visitors an outstanding, different experience.
Commended airports are selected through a large-scale customer survey. Here are this year’s results:
1. Singapore Changi Airport
Taking the top spot for the seventh year in a row, there can be no debate that Singapore’s Changi Airport is world-class.
It connects visitors to over 200 destinations while boasting unique facilities and features such as a large, lush butterfly garden and a monumental indoor waterfall.
Beyond these aspects, Changi is hugely popular with international visitors and offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
2. Tokyo Haneda Airport
Offering both domestic and international flights, Haneda Airport plays an important role in furthering Japan’s development as a tourist destination.
Visitors can enjoy seeing beautiful, traditional decor themed to each season and try out the delicious Japanese cuisine that is available throughout the airport. It truly introduces visitors to the country’s culture as soon as they step off the plane.
3. Incheon International Airport
Known as one of the busiest airports in the world as well as the biggest in South Korea, Incheon Airport is one for the books.
It is a former winner of the title of best airport in the world and offers sleeping pods in a nap zone, seasonal garden displays and divine Korean cuisine.
4. Hamad International Airport
Doha’s international airport in the capital city of Qatar can accommodate up to 30-million passengers annually and has been described as the most architecturally-significant terminal complex in the world – as well as one of the most luxurious. While between flights, travellers can enjoy a dip in the airport’s 25-metre pool.
5. Hong Kong International Airport
Another previous winner of the Airport of the Year title is Hong Kong International Airport.
It serves over 100 airlines that go to 180 locations around the world, including 44 destinations in the Chinese Mainland.
6. Chubu Centre International Airport
Nagoya’s international airport takes 6th place on the list this year. It has a huge amount of domestic traffic and services a number of regional routes operating to areas such as Bangkok and Singapore. Long-haul routes include Helsinki, Frankfurt, Honolulu and Detroit.
7. Munich International Airport
Munich Airport is the second-busiest airport in Germany and the secondary hub for Lufthansa German Airlines.
It acts as somewhat of a city centre offering its visitors a shopping experience with over 150 retail stores, as well as 50 spots to eat and drink.
8. Heathrow Airport
London’s Heathrow Airport is known as the busiest airport in the UK and Europe by passenger traffic, and was once the world’s busiest airport for international passengers before being overtaken by Dubai.
The airport is a hub of local culture and is known for its great hospitality.
9. Tokyo Narita International Airport
Serving the Greater Tokyo Area of Japan, Narita is the international hub for Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.
As of 2016, Narita was the second-busiest passenger airport in Japan.
10. Zurich Airport
This airport earned its spot by being the largest international airport for Switzerland as well as a hub for Swiss International Airlines.
It offers its visitors many fun, interactive experiences – such as an observation deck with indoor swings and a miniature plane for kids to clamber through – and delightful food at eateries like Sprüngli Café.
