A female traveller in the Philippines was arrested and fined on a local beach for wearing an extremely revealing bikini. Before her arrest she was warned by hotel staff that the costume would be deemed offensive by locals.
After ignoring the hotel staff and claiming her attire was “a work of art,” the Taiwanese tourist headed for the beach with her partner. The couple were walking along the shore when locals reported her to the police. Shortly after she was asked to cover up, arrested and fined PHP2,500, around R700.
The ordeal occurred on the resort island of Boracay which has recently reopened to holiday makers.
This incident is a prime example of how respecting the laws, culture, customs and traditions of a foreign country you are visiting is imperative.
