In an extremely rare sighting, a lone lioness attempted to take down a young elephant to feed her cubs in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. The incident was recorded by filmmaker Samuel Chevallier.
Speaking to Latest Sightings, Chevallier said that his group had just left their camp and were en route to an area where there had been a pride of lions the night before. “The early morning light broke and we were happy to find that they were still resting in the same place.”
The group watched the lions for a short while when the mother got up and moved her and her cubs through the bush. “Slowly we pursued them to see what they were up to and after some time, the mother headed into the thicket. The next thing, all we heard was the screeching sound of an elephant!” said Chevallier.
The group then got a visual of the lioness on top of the young elephant, trying to get the elephant down. The lion can be seen clawing at the elephants face, sinking her teeth near the animal’s eye and resisting the elephants efforts to free itself from her grip.
The elephant does eventually triumph and flings the lioness off and trotted off after her into the bush. The cubs were nearby throughout the ordeal.
