The toll tariff adjustment will take effect from 1 March 2019 and will henceforth apply to the next 12 months in the 2019/20 tax year. The increase is calculated at nearly 4.6% in accordance with the CPI, which measures monthly changes in the prices for consumer products and records the rate of inflation. The toll road tariff adjustments are made annually in alignment with inflation rates.

Most notably, the tariff increase will apply to the N3 toll road between Johannesburg and Durban, on the N4 between the borders of Mozambique and Botswana, as well as toll sections of the N1, N2, N17, N12, R30, and R21.

Also note the new prices for these popular routes:

– N1: Cape Town to Joburg, four tolls = R183 (up R8)
– N3: Joburg to Durban, four tolls = R242 (up R11)
– N4: Pretoria to Mozambique border, four tolls = R262 (up R12)

The toll increases will also apply to the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), which seeks to expand and upgrade the freeway network in a sustainable and intelligently integrative way.

Monthly toll users who drive light motor vehicles (Class A2) will see the rate increase from R273 to R276. Discounts for frequent and qualifying local toll road users are still applicable, and drivers should apply for these at the participating toll plaza offices.

Toll roads make up 13% of the 22,214 kilometres for which SANRAL is responsible.
