Pictures: Pretoria’s purple haze Posted by Nidha Narrandes on 9 October 2018 The colour of spring in South Africa? Purple. Take a drive through any of the tree-lined streets of Pretoria or Johannesburg and there’ll be no doubt about it. Jacarandas in full bloom confirm that this lighthearted season has arrived in SA. A carpet of lilac lines the pavements and towering blooms dot the city landscape – it is a mesmerising time of the year. The jacaranda flowering season varies according to climate, although you can count on the blooms during the late weeks of September and this profusion of blossoms last all the way to November. There are more than 70 000 of these trees found in Pretoria alone. Sadly, jacarandas are not indigenous to South Africa, they were imported from South America about 100 years ago. There is a myth among students that if a jacaranda blossom falls on your head during an exam you are bound to pass – so you can expect to see students walking around shaking down trees for a bit of luck.
