Last year in June, 12 boys and their football coach got trapped inside the Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand. The Wild Boars football team became stuck when the cave flooded as a result of the monsoon season. The team were trapped there for more than two weeks.
Eight months on and Netflix has secured the rights to create a mini-series about the rescue mission of the boys and their coach. It took 90 expert divers from all over the world to successfully rescue the team. Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu and Nattawut ‘Baz’ Poonpiriya will be directing the miniseries.
Netflix’s Erika North told BBC, ‘The story combines so many unique local and universal themes which connect people from all walks of life, from all around the world. Thailand is a very important market for Netflix and we are looking forward to bringing this inspiring local, but globally resonant story to life.’
The harrowing rescue mission tragically saw one person, Saman Gunan, die. The Thai navy diver lost consciousness on his way out of the cave complex after he had delivered air tanks to the trapped boys and coach.
