A severe hailstorm hit the Sun City Resort near Rustenburg in the North West on Saturday, causing damage to 200 guest rooms.
‘The whole thing happened in a matter of about 20 to 30 minutes. Luckily, there were no fatalities, and until further notice there will be no checking in taking place,’ Sun City’s public relations and communications manager, Tshepang Motsekuoa, said.
The most severe damage was recorded at the Sun Soho Hotel, and the cost of it has yet to be determined. The hotel was also booked to capacity, and the guests may be reimbursed for their stays.
Guests had to be evacuated and accommodated in guesthouses around the Mogwase and Ledig areas after the storm. Although Mogwase and Ledig are fairly close to Sun City, they were not affected by the hail storm.
The most damaged areas include the Sun Soho Hotel, The Cascades, Palace of the Lost City, Sun Cabanas, The Vacation Club, and the top floor of the Sun Central building.
As the power had been cut off in many of the hotels, escalators and the sky train have been left immobile, and day visitors have been flocking into the resort since Sunday morning to see the damage.
