Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula announced the prohibition of cruise and passenger ships entering any South African ports, from Wednesday 18 March.
This regulation forms part of many that have been implemented to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country. This specific prohibition extends to all of the countries 8 seaports.
‘This affects all leisure travellers. With effect from today, no cruise ships will be permitted to call into South Africa,’ said Mbalula during a press briefing.
Cruise ships from South Africa will also not be allowed to leave, effectively cancelling any outbound trips.
In addition, ships are no longer allowed to change crews once they dock in the country, this includes cargo vessels.
‘Cargo ships will still be allowed to call into our ports to offload and to load cargo. This is to minimise the adverse effects of the virus on our economy and our global trade position,’ Mbalula said.
Port authorities have also been requested to provide protective gear for dock workers who will come into contact with personnel from merchant vessels.
