Shark Board dismisses sardine activity in KZN

In an official statement, the KwaZulu-Natal Shark Board (KZNSB) has dismissed reports of sardine activity in KZN, but confirmed reports of activity between Nqabara River Mouth and Dwesa Marine Reserve. Large shoals with thousands of gannets feeding on them were spotted.

Acting Head of Operations, Greg Thompson, said in the statement that large shoals of the fish have been seen in the Rame Heads, an area 26km south of Port St Johns. Common dolphins and gannets were also spotted feeding on sardines here.

As for activity further north, Thompson said, ‘There have been no further sightings of much activity north of this but hopefully the sardine activity will increase between Port St Johns and Port Edward after the cold front passes later this evening.’

He continued, ‘These fish are very unpredictable and have always kept us all guessing about their movement. There are always numerous opinions but one seldom guesses right when it comes to sardines. It is probably just as well otherwise the sardine stocks might have been non-existent by now.’

Thompson noted that the reported activity is taking place only in inshore areas at this time. There is, however, a possibility of being surprised by the fish, as some may have ‘moved through undetected in the deeper waters’.
