SA has largest travel and tourism economy in Africa

South Africa has the largest travel and tourism economy in Africa, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). These findings come from research conducted in the annual review of the economic impact and social importance of the Travel and Tourism sector, which was released on 18 March.

Travel and Tourism has a big impact on out economy with almost 10% of the South African jobs belonging to this sector.

In 2018, South Africa’s travel and tourism sector contributed R425.8-billion to the economy. This amounts to 8.6% of the total economic activity in South Africa for the year. The amount is the largest of any country in Africa.

The total number of jobs generated by the industry amounted to 1.5-million, a total of 9.2% of South Africa’s total. Travellers who visit our shores for leisure make up 64% of all visitors to the country, while 36% come here for business. The findings also stipulate that domestic tourism amounted to 56% of travel and international tourism equated to 44%.

Commenting on these numbers, Gloria Guevara, WTTC President and CEO, said, ‘Travel and tourism contributes more to the South Africa economy than in any other African country. In total our sector contributes R425.8 billion and 1.5-million jobs which makes it a formidable part of the economy.’

She continued, ‘Looking to the future, I believe that travel and tourism is South Africa’s greatest resource and the country’s strategy for expansion which priorities regional integration, environment sustainability and putting the community at the heart of decisions will make for a successful combination.’
