The Blue Flag Programme, now in its 31st year in South Africa, focuses on the environmental management of marine and coastal habitats. Water quality, environmental management, safety, and amenities are just a few of the criteria to be considered before bestowing a beach with a Blue Flag status.
All Blue Flag beaches have to meet very strict international criteria and the programme is locally-managed by WESSA (the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa). Internationally, over 4 400 beaches, boats and marinas currently hold Blue Flag status in 46 countries.
This year, 46 South African beaches will be flying these flags. The flags will also be raised at eight marinas and used by 12 sustainable tourism boats around South Africa.
