Over two weekends, Reforest Fest planted 9,500 indigenous trees in the Platbos forest – a personal best for the festival.
Reforest Fest, ‘probably the biggest tree planting festival in Africa’, has combined local music, vegan and vegetarian food, educational talks, camping under the stars, yoga, and planting trees for the last eight years.
The saplings were planted by 520 families at the Family Weekend and 680 guests at the Friends Weekend.
What’s more, this crowd left the festival organisers with only half a bag of rubbish, which was cleared from the campsite.
The festival strove to ‘tread lightly’, so used only earth-friendly cleaning products and supplied bio-degradable loo rolls.

In just under a decade, the festival has planted more than 55,000 trees after clearing the alien vegetation from the edges of the ancient indigenous forest of Platbos.
The organisers, Greenpop, have planted over 100,000 indigenous trees in South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania in their mission to ‘reconnect people with the planet’.
Platbos forest is Africa’s southernmost forest. It is part of the indigenous forests which cover just 0.05% of the Western Cape. It is home to threatened species such as the Cape Leopard, the Leopard Toad and the Honey Badger.
