Two suspects were found with 10 pieces of rhino horn at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday evening, estimated to be worth R2-million.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) and airport officials arrested the suspects who are reportedly aged 36 and 40.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant colonel Katelgo Mogale said that an intelligence-driven operation along with a team of detectives uncovered the rhino horn. Mogale added that the suspects were intercepted before fleeing the country.
“The suspects arrived at the airport with the intention of boarding a flight to Vietnam but they were intercepted by the SAPS team and their luggage was searched.”
A multi-disciplinary team at OR Tambo International Airport led the thorough and intensive investigation.
Mogale says that the efforts of various parties in fighting against endangered species and wildlife crimes is critical and continues to yield positive results. “This is one of many successes in the ongoing war against endangered species and wildlife crimes in the country.”
Both of the suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on charges of illegal possession of rhino horn.
“This arrest is indicative of their commitment to rid the airport of criminality.
