O R Tambo International named African Airport of the year

Posted on 25 February 2019

O R Tambo International Airport won the award for the African Airport of the year at the Air Cargo Africa conference, awards and exhibition hosted by Messe München in Gauteng last week, the fourth time the airport has been awarded the title.

The event was held in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and welcomed over 80 international exhibitors and over 3,000 trade visitors from 60 nations, 30 of which were African.

The Air Cargo Africa awards are hosted annually to acknowledge leading cargo logistics service providers. Airports and airlines are recognised for many different categories, including performance, equipment, information technology (IT) and customer service.

O R Tambo International Airport is South Africa’s biggest and busiest airport. An estimated 82% of South Africa’s total air cargo volume, roughly 400,000 tonnes per year, is sent through the airport. 92% of this is international cargo.

General Manager of O R Tambo Ms Bongiwe Pityi-Vokwana says the award is a demonstration of the commitment to deliver the best infrastructure for the airport’s stakeholders. She also notes that cargo plays a massive role in airline’s income stream, which is why O R Tambo International Airport is continually positioned as a key player in the business.

O R Tambo is planning a R4.5-billion upgrade that will take place over seven phases. Read here for more information.
