Le Belea Sports Bar on De Bakke beach in Mossel Bay burnt down in the early hours of Thursday, 16 May.
According to News24, Fire and Rescue Services received an emergency call just after midnight and the fire was put out by 8am. Upon arrival at the scene, the entire building was already burning.
Fortunately no one was injured, but the sports bar’s owner Bertram Braaf lost all cash and stock on the premises. Braaf said to News24, ‘Your heart, everything, went into the building and this happens here.’
Police are currently investigating how the fire started. According to Algoa FM there is no suspicion of foul play but as routine, a case of arson is being investigated.
Municipal manager Thys Giliomee said in a statement to News24, ‘for now, we will secure the premises and decide at a later stage on the way forward and possible rebuilding of the icon[ic] building.’
