Milan-Cortina won 47 votes, beating out the city of Stockholm and ski resort Are partnership, which got 34 votes and was the only other bid on the ballot paper.
The president of the IOC, Thomas Bach, said this region will be a superb host because of the passion and knowledge of Winter Olympics sports that both Italian fans and venue operators have.
This is not the first time Italy has hosted this international sporting event. Cortina previously hosted it in 1956 and Turin had a turn in 2006.
The past two Winter Olympics have been in Asia – South Korea was the host last year. Beijing, meanwhile, will be hosting the event in 2022.
The games will be held from 6-22 February. The winter Paralympics will be held in May from 6-15.
