The human backpack who’s travelled the world

Kevan Chandler, also known as ‘the human backpack’, was born with a genetic disease affecting his voluntary muscle movement. His condition prevents him from walking independently, but it hasn’t stopped him from travelling the world.

His friends wanted to share their adventures with him, so they designed a backpack that would allow them to take turns carrying him on their backs as they travelled through European and Britain, visiting cities and countryside in France, England and Ireland.

Kevan is bringing out a book, titled We Carry Kevan: Six Friends. Three Countries. No Wheelchair that was inspired by the three-week backpacking trip, which helped dispel stereotypes about people travelling with disabilities. The book will be available in April 2019.

Kevan has also founded a non-profit organisation called We Carry Kevan, which works to enhance the mobility of individuals with disabilities.
