Hikers and outdoor-lovers should take caution before going outside, as a heat warning has been issued for the Western Cape today, 25 February. Temperatures are predicted to soar well above the high thirties and even reach 40°C in some areas like Cape Town, the west coast and the winelands.
If you’re an adventure-seeker planning on hiking, swimming, surfing or doing other outdoor activities today, keep these tips in mind:
– Try to avoid going into the sun between 10am and 2pm.
– Always wear a high SPF sunscreen and hat, and try to cover your arms and legs.
– Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
– Do not start any fires outdoors, even if you think it’s small and contained.
– If you take pets outdoors with you, make sure they drink plenty of water too and try to cool them down in water or in the shade.
