In an effort to reduce its carbon output, the city of Vienna is offering free concert and museum tickets to users who decide to walk, cycle, or use public transport instead of using a car to get around.
The Austrian Capital, which was voted the worlds most livable city by Lonely Planet, will unveil the application on 26 February. Known as ‘Cultural Token’, a total of 1,000 people will test the application over a six-month trial.
Cultural Token works by tracking the users’ movement and then calculates their carbon savings throughout the duration of the trial. Once an individual has stored up a total of 20km of Co2 savings, they will receive a ‘token’ which can then be exchanged for a concert, museum, or theatre ticket. There won’t be a limit on the number of tokens an individual can collect, however, once a user reaches a total of five tokens they’ll have to use at least one before collecting anymore.
Venues participating in the Culture Token trial include the Kunsthalle, Wien Museum, the Volkstheater, and the Konzerthaus. If Culture Token proves to be a success it will see a wider release to the public in the autumn.
Vienna is well known for its public transport system, which includes trains, buses, trams and underground lines that operate in almost every part of the city. As a matter of fact, the number of people that use public transport outnumbers the number of people that use conventional vehicles to get around.
