Silversea’s Silver Whisper ship, which can accommodate 388 passengers, set sail from Fort Lauderdale in the US on Monday and will cruise the world for the next four months, making stops at every continent.

The ultra-luxurious ship underwent extensive renovations in 2018 ahead of this year’s pioneering world cruise, which stops at 62 ports in over 20 countries and includes 33 off-shore experiences for guests.

Fares for the 140-day cruise started at $62,000 (about R900,000) and top out at $240,000 (about R3,473,000) for the spacious owner’s suite which, according to Travel and Leisure, is ‘the most expensive cruise accommodation in industry history’.

The cruise includes three days in Antarctica as well as 32 other off-shore experiences, such as dining under the stars in the Red Sea desert, musical and culinary experiences in San Juan, getting to understand Polynesian culture with an anthropologist on the island of Moorea, and viewing Rome’s churches and museums.

The ship is sailing south from the US and stopping in San Juan, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires before reaching Antarctica. It will then head back up the west coast of South America, making its way past Chile and on to Australia. Other stops include Singapore and Mumbai before sailing to Europe where the cruise will come to an end in May.

The company Silversea will be running two more world cruises in 2021.

The Finest World Tour 2021 will be a 150-day excursion and it will visit six continents and 34 countries. The Uncharted World Tour 2021 will visit 107 destinations in 30 countries across six continents, including Antarctica, and will last 167 days.
