Ethiopian Airlines has announced plans to build Africa’s largest airport. The $5-billion hub could become Africa’s busiest airport, which is currently OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

According to Travel + Leisure, Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said that the airline finished its 2025 goals in 2018, 7 years ahead of schedule. The airline is going ahead with its 2035 vision, which includes the new airport.

The current airport is in Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The new airport will be called ‘Absera’ and will take up approximately 33 square kilometres. The airport will be equipped with duty-free shopping, malls, hotels and training centre, in a bid to become an ‘airport-city’.

The airline has yet to announce the opening date of the airport but it is set to challenge the scale of Istanbul’s new airport, which will be the world’s largest when construction is completed in 2028.
