New Zealand’s national carrier says that it serves more than eight million cups of coffee onboard its flights every year. In an effort to reduce waste its trialing edible coffee cups, made from ‘leak-proof’ vanilla-flavoured biscotti.
The cups are made by Kiwi family-owned business Twiice, which says it’s working on chocolate-lined, as well as a gluten-free cups and it is also developing an edible range of crockery.
‘The cups have been a big hit with the customers who have used these, and we’ve also been using the cups as dessert bowls,’ Air New Zealand’s Niki Chave said.
According to a statement from the airline, ‘The ‘twiice’ edible cup trial backs up Air New Zealand’s recent switch to plant-based coffee cups on board all aircraft and in lounges.’
Made from paper and corn instead of plastic, the plant-based cups can be broken down in a commercial composter.
‘Switching to plant-based coffee cups is expected to prevent around 15-million cups from going to landfill annually.’
Customers are also encouraged to bring their own reusable cups onboard its airplanes and into its lounges.
