Africa’s longest suspension bridge opens in Mozambique

Posted by Elise Kirsten on 12 November 2018

The drive time from Kwa-Zulu Natal to Mozambique, specifically from Maputo to the South African border near Kosi Bay has been slashed from six hours to about 90 minutes with the opening of Africa’s longest suspension bridge and connecting road network.

President of Mozambique, Felipe Nyusi, opened the three kilometre-long Maputo-Catembe Bridge at its inauguration ceremony on Saturday. The brand-new structure connects Maputo on the northern bank of an inlet of the Indian Ocean that was previously only possible to cross by boat, to Katembe on the southern bank. The bridge is also part of a project that connects Maputo directly to the South African border by road for the first time.

SA People’s News quoted a statement made by KZN’s Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs: “The road will see the travel time between Maputo to Kosi Bay, KwaZulu-Natal’s East-coast border post, drastically reduced, from 6 hours to 90 minutes.

“This is a huge achievement! It will boost trade and tourism between South Africa and Mozambique.”
