Johannesburg has welcomed the opening of Africa’s largest waterpark over the December holidays. Happy Island Waterworld has various exhilarating waterslides and cool pools to choose from that the whole family can enjoy, making for a fantastic day trip. The Typhoon slide, spiraling downward in the shape of a literal typhoon, is a first for African waterparks – this one is definitely not for the faint hearted.
Happy Island has amenities for all thrill-seeker types. The Gravity Loop, Spiral Slide, High-speed Slide, and four-man Behemoth Bowl are some of the 11 slides that will see adrenaline junkies running back to the start for more.
What is more, the water park impressively boasts the two largest wave pools in Africa, which are 20 000m2 respectively and are bound to get the blood pumping. The hydraulic systems create ocean-like waves to make you feel like you’re in the surf – without the sharks, of course.
For the children, the Fun Slides, Amazon Rainforest, Spray Park, Boome Rango and the Lazy River will be endless sources of fun. There are also massage pools, which will be heated once summer is over, that are best suited for those looking to chill out and not lose their costumes to a giant slide.
Upon arrival, visitors can purchase a waterproof RFID wrist band for R20, on which they can load money for food, drinks, tube rentals, and so on – removing the inconvenience of carrying cash around and risking it getting wet. Locker facilities are available for keeping your personal belongings in, and guests can use their wristbands to open and lock them. There is also a selection of food vendors for those who have worked up an appetite from all the running around. Visitors can also browse around the park’s convenience store.
Medics are onsite every day as well as three full-time ILS and registered paramedics, and a medical centre is also available. The park also has three companies on standby for ambulance dispatch if necessary. There are full-time security personnel and security cameras located around the park, ensuring all visitors can have a safe as well as fun experience. In addition there is a lost and found facility, changing rooms with showers and free parking for visitors.
The park is open daily from 9am to 6pm including on weekends. However, the park reserves the right to remain closed if weather conditions are unsafe. Tickets can be purchased online through the website or at the gates. Adults pay R199, children under 1.3m can enter for R99 and children under the age of 2 enter for free.
