Tackling summits and remote trails is a challenging business. Gear Editor Matthew Sterne looks at products that are worth carrying the distance.
Hot and cold

The classic Stanley flask is an old favourite among Getaway staff. The new Go Series has the same quality but is more affordable than previous models. Stanley claims that the flask (470ml) will keep contents hot for nine hours, cold for 14 and iced for 50 hours. Ultimately, it means that you can have coffee at lunchtime and cold water all day: just the kind of convenience that a long hike calls for.
Got your pack
R2 199, capeunionmart.co.za
This no-frills Pioneer 65L backpack is one of the latest in the K-Way range. It has all the basic features one generally looks for in a rucksack: loops for attaching trekking poles, space for a hydration pack, adjustable straps (aluminium rods lining the back of the pack provide support), a rain cover and side and top pockets. It also has an emergency whistle and a zip at the bottom of the bag for easy access.
Towel market

How light is whisper light? If you’re a Pocket Towel, just 112g – the weight of Sea to Summit’s large towel (60 x 120cm). It has a silky feel due to its knit and can absorb three times its own weight in water. The towel also dries exceptionally quickly, which comes in handy on multi-day hikes. Packing into its own storage pouch, it’s available in three other sizes.
A light dinner
R289, adventureinc.co.za
From stirring coffee to eating couscous, this three-piece Sea to Summit AlphaLight cutlery set (176g) has you covered when every gram you’re carrying counts. Despite being so light, the utensils are made from hard-anodised, aircraft-grade aluminium for lifelong use and have a smooth matt finish for easy eating. A carabiner is included to keep the pieces together.
