3 top coffee spots in Johannesburg

Wake up and smell the coffee at these three great roasteries in Jozi.

Motherland Coffee in Dunkeld

Father Coffee, Braamfontein

73 Juta Street, Braamfontein

Braamfontein’s new roastery is pretty enough for Pinterest. Wood panels zigzag from floor to ceiling, juxtaposed with floating tables and chairs. The rest of the decor is either black or white, carried through in everything from napkins to teaspoons. Seating is limited, so takeaway is your best bet. If in need of a caffeine kick, try the skhotado, a combination of espresso, custard and Red Bull. www.fathercoffee.co.za

Warm and Glad, Craighall Park

357 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall Park

It’s less cafe’ and more social spot, evident from the number of creatives using it as a ‘coffice’ (there’s free Wi-Fi). The quirky space is homely and trendy at the same time – Justin Timberlake blasts from the speakers, and comfy couches invite you to browse through one of the international magazines on display, while sipping on some TWG tea imported from Singapore. www.warmandglad.com

Motherland, Dunkeld West

Corner Jan Smuts Avenue and Bompas Road, Dunkeld West

This rapidly expanding company has branches in Rosebank and Braamfontein, but the Dunkeld branch is special. It’s the first cafe’ in SA to use a draught tap system to dispense chilled milk. Try the Dictator – chocolate, whipped cream, espresso and condensed milk. The food is as good a reason to visit as the Fairtrade African coffee. www.motherlandcoffee.co.za
