You may find it strange that there’s no mention of the Land se Kloof Trail in Anysberg Nature Reserve on CapeNature’s website. In fact, CapeNature insists that ‘hikers are most welcome to explore the reserve, although no formal trails exist’. However, you’ll find a map at the reserve’s reception indicating the gorgeous route, which follows a stream up one of the steep kloofs so typical of this section of the Cape Fold Mountains, in the Klein Karoo between Ladismith and Laingsburg.
After parking at reception, follow a sandy jeep-track for six kilometres to the trail marker at the mouth of the kloof. From here, the path, which is marked by cairns, cuts left into a hidden valley, frequently taking you across the perennial river.
It’s a bit of a bundu bash at times, broken by stops at swimming holes but, whatever you do, don’t turn back or you’ll miss the best bit: a waterfall with a deep pool about three kilometres from the trailhead. If you have the energy, continue to the top of the ridge for incredible views over the reserve and the Karoo, then return the way you came.
