For the past six months our planners (humans with brains the size of planets) have been trying the find the best spots to launch the first ever social rally into Southern Africa.
We wanted a place where crews could say goodbye and pull off with Table Mountain or the Jozi skyline in their rearview mirror. A place where we could all gather on registration day, compare wagons, meet fellow adventurers and then set off in the early hours of the following day, filling our nostrils with the fumes of freshly-burnt fuel and rubber! Naturally only two places in the whole of South Africa came to mind:
Killarney Race Track, Cape Town
A legendary circuit with decades and decades of history in motor racing, bike racing and of course – wouldn’t be Cape Town if we didn’t mention – drag racing (cue Vin Diesel voice, ‘I live my life quarter mile at a time’). Killarney is also a track that has, without a shadow of a doubt, seen more money in fancy cars written off than any other race track in South Africa, except probably for Main Road, Muizenberg. The vibe is immense!
Registration day: Tuesday 21 June 2011/ Start Day: Wednesday 22 June 2011
Kyalami Race Track, Johannesburg
The spiritual home of South African racing and the former host of the two South African F1 races. This is where the late great Ayrton Senna and legendary Nigel Mansell once dueled and put foot to-the-max. This June will be no different as Put Foot Rally crews gather at Kyalami before being unleashed, revving engines (1.1 l right through to V8) before disappearing on an epic African adventure.
Registration Day: Tuesday 21 June 2011 / Start Day: Wednesday 22 June 2011
