Okay, so you’ve been looking for a 4×4? You’ve decided it’s time to get out there and explore the road less travelled. But you want a cool vehicle, slightly rugged, spacious enough to fit all your stuff, safe to drive and of course, excellent off-road capabilities. ‘Sure’, you say, ‘but I can’t afford something like that.’
Well take another look, the GWM H5 Diesel has just been launched in South Africa, and it offers all the features you would expect from a 4×4 but it’s R100k to R200k more affordable than the rest, and that’s just the start. With a new 4D20 turbo diesel engine at its heart, the GWM H5 is a greener, quieter, more energy-efficient engine, pumping a cool 7L/100km through its veins. Not only that, it’s also quite a sexy beast with cool lines and a sporty front grill. At such an incredible price and with innumerable features, the H5 is a vehicle that will give you, and many more South Africans, access to the SUV lifestyle.

Suitably impressed by the features, I took the GWM H5 for a test drive. It builds momentum well, cruises steadily on the road and handles excellently. It’s an SUV that feels safe and secure, with loads of space for kids, toys, bags and equipment as well cool compartmental space for personal items. While slightly sluggish on the uphill pull off, the GWM has plenty of power and recovers well. The vehicle feels mechanically sound although I noticed a slight gear lever vibration in third gear.
An eye for safety
With ABS, airbags, child-seat ISOFIX features, auto-locking of all doors at 15 km/h, sidfe impact safety barys, front pre-tension seatbelts with load limiters and a child safety locking mechanism, the guys over at GWM have really pulled out all the stops in making the H5 as safe as it can be.
