‘I feel good today’ reads the signage perched on a wall at Bon Hotel 64 on Gordon in the sunny city of Durban. If you weren’t feeling great, this would be the time to turn your day around. How could you not? The weather shouts ‘go to the beach’ and the air is thick, not purely from the humidity but from all the fun possibilities.
A sign to turn your mood around.
Bon Hotel is located in the heart of Morningside so it is ideal for staycations or business travel. I visited for exactly 24 hours to attend an event so location was key. Bright red pops of colour break up the grey interior and add a touch of playfulness to the look. I recall staying at a very artsy hotel in New York in 2012, with bright colour accents, and wondered why South Africa hadn’t embraced its quirky side.
We’re finally getting there and hoteliers are becoming a lot more daring and comfortable with the extraordinary, which is great for guests looking for style and comfort.
The contemporary design plays out throughout the 35 rooms in the hotel. Other facilities include a small restaurant and a pint-size bar. The room decor is modern and unfussy because, let’s face it, when you are visiting for a short period of time, extra really is unnecessary. The hotel was once a home and the wooden flooring has been restored, so you can expect a mix of old and new throughout the decor. High ceilings accentuate the space and the bathrooms offer the most invigorating rain shower.
The rooms are large with high ceilings.
You’re guaranteed a good night’s sleep because of the quiet location, and breakfast is rustled up early in case you need to dash to a meeting. The breakfast nook area was buzzing with curiosity when the sun came up and Durban’s lovely weather allowed us to soak up the sun and enjoy our eggs in the courtyard.
If you have a small company and would prefer to host your conference or business workshops here, the hotel can accommodate 30 delegates.
The 64 on Gordon definitely has that edgy style and comfort that makes you feel right at home. Go for the fad, stay for the feel.
