Indian Forest Service official Susanta Nanda posted a video on his Twitter account showing a lion running down a street full of people and parked motorbikes in what he identifies as Madhavpur village in Gujarat, India’s westernmost state.
Gir National Park in Gujarat is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion, a subspecies of the African lion which was almost hunted to extinction in the 1800s. According to the Gir National Park sanctuary, there were only 20 Asiatic lions left in 1913 and the population has grown to 523 (according to 2015 census). It seems as if the lion running down the road may have been one of these.
The video was posted on Saturday 7 March, however, according to the Hindustan Times, it’s unclear when the incident actually took place.
Some people responded by asking if the lion is safe to which Nanda replied ‘Pretty safe’.
