The recent wildfires in the Greyton Nature Reserve in the Overberg region has left devastation in its wake. The fire started on Wednesday, 11 December and is being fanned by gale-force winds resulting in an uphill battle for firefighters.
Overberg Fire Chief Reinard Geldenhuys believes the fire was ignited by two children.
“The fire started Wednesday late afternoon, we believe two children set it in what we call a malicious ignition, we are busy with the investigation and we have a good idea who they are and we’re pursuing that,” he said.
If you have made plans in the area for the festive season, here’s what you need to know.
As the fires have not yet been put out, it would be wise to call ahead before you travel to the area. The affected area will be extremely vulnerable, with many facilities closed and rehabilitation projects commencing.
A few accommodation sites have been damaged, and the Lismore Estate Vineyards near Greyton has been completely destroyed and is currently unoperational. If you have already booked accommodations and activities, phone them as soon as possible to enquire whether they have been affected.
Anyone who would like to help, via financial contribution towards the firefighters or otherwise, can phone Andrew White on 082 835 2668 for more details.
Other beautiful areas to consider visiting nearby during the holidays are McGergor, Robertson, Theewaters Nature Reserve, Jonkershoek Nature Reserve and Franschhoek.
Keep in mind that the N2 along the affected area is not the safest option as visibility is poor. Find alternative routes if you are traveling in the vicinity.
