5 ways to spoil your pawfect pooch

Posted by Imogen Searra on 26 August 2019

Dogs have long been considered man’s best friend and one could argue that fur babies deserve to be celebrated every day. Today on International Dog Day, however, our furry friends should get extra special attention. Here are 5 ways to treat your pawfect pooch.

1. Take your pup to the beach

If your pup enjoys a swim and you live near a beach or river, enjoy a watery adventure. Bring along a ball or toy that you can throw for him or her and some post-swim snacks. The fun you both have will strengthen your bond. Also, don’t forget to pack a towel to dry your pooch off and to protect your car seats.

2. Book a night at a dog-friendly hotel

Pack a bag and head off to treat your pup and yourself to a night at a dog-friendly hotel. These establishments are becoming increasingly popular, as hotels around South Africa are accommodating pet-owners who don’t want to leave their best friend behind. Some pet-friendly hotels across the country include:

The Oyster Box, Durban; Holiday Inn, Rosebank; Hlangana Lodge, Oudtshoorn. For more SA pet-friendly hotels, click here.

3. Take your pooch to a dog-friendly restaurant

Take your pooch with you for a bite to eat to a restaurant that caters for people and dogs, too! Whether you want a full meal, a quick snack or a sweet treat, here are some dog-friendly eateries you can enjoy together:

Paul’s Homemade Ice-Cream, has stores in Durban, Rosebank, Sandton, Parkhurst, Hyde Park, Randburg, Bedfordview and Eastcliff. There’s nothing like an ice cream date, especially with your dog by your side.

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in Cape Town can accommodate you and your pup for the night, or at the Leopard Bar for a delicious meal. The Hotel has a specially crafted menu for your pet pal. Soak up the incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean alongside your best friend.

Oh My Soul Café in Durban North is a vegan eatery that caters to humans and hounds. There are some cold treats, like doggy ‘ice cream’ that can help your pup stay cool in the heat, as well as dog biscuits. All food, including that for your companion, is freshly made.

4. Send your dog for a sleepover at a hotel

While the human is away, the dog will play. If you want your pup to socialise and enjoy a fun sleepover, there are a few dog hotels across the country that will accommodate him, or her. Whether you’re going away or not, a trip to a dog hotel will give your pup the chance to explore a new place and make some friends.

At Fritz Dog Hotel in Cape Town, Sunshine Pet Resort in Paarl, Zimzala K9 Hotel in Stellenbosch, Paws Resort in Midrand, Must Love Dogs Luxury Emporium in Joburg are some of the dog hotels that will take care of your pooch.
