Throughout Asia there has been a growth in ‘begpackers’, a term used for foreign travellers who beg in their host countries in order to fund their travels.
Begpackers will sit on the street with a sign requesting money from locals.
In Bali, Indonesia, the problem is particularly bad. According to The Sun, Setyo Budiwardoyo from the island’s immigration department said in an official statement, that begpackers are being reported to their embassies.
‘We tend to report these cases to the relevant embassies, so that they can oversee their citizens who are on holiday,’ said Budiwardoyo.
According to The Sun, begpackers are mainly from Australia, England or Russia.
Locals are becoming outraged with the influx of begpackers on the island, the majority of whom come from wealthier countries than the host nations.
Other countries experiencing this begpacking phenomenon include South Korea and China.
