Parisian officials have announced plans to encompass the Eiffel Tower with the largest garden park in the city to reduce traffic and motor pollution.
The City of Love held a competition for architectural companies to submit redesigns of the surrounding area of the Eiffel Tower. Paris City Hall announced that the design from London-based architects Gustafson, Porter and Bowman won.
In a statement, Gustafson, Porter and Bowman said, ‘The unique quality of this competition is a credit to the City of Paris’ vision and ambition for the future. We hope and anticipate that this competition becomes an exemplar for future competitions of this scale.
For our part, we aim to honour it by continuing in the spirit of open and enthusiastic collaboration.”
According to Lonely Planet, the only vehicles allowed in the area will be those for emergency services and public transport. The Seine bridge and Pont d’Iéna will be car free.
A walk and cycle route, a pedestrian garden and two new public squares called Place de Varsovie and Place Branly will all be built and park land will be restored.
Surrounding the structure will be a 1.6km-long green space that will connect Place du Trocadéro, the Palais de Chaillot, the Pont d’Iéna, the Parc du Champ de Mars and the Ecole Militaire, with the Eiffel Tower taking center stage.
The area spans across 54 hectares and will cost an estimated €72 million. The funding for the project will be derived entirely from ticket sales to the Eiffel Tower, according to Lonely Planet.
The project is due to be complete in 2024.
