Don’t blink: Africa gets a bullet train

Posted by Ondela Mlandu on 21 November 2018

The first high-speed train to reach Africa was inaugurated on 15 November in Morocco, by King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron and is set to revolutionise Africa’s transport system.

The project valued at over $2 billion (R28 billion) links the cities of Tangier and Casablanca, with the speed trains cutting travel time between Tangiers and Morocco’s economic capital substantially. They will run at 320 km/h and cover the distance in 2 hours 10 minutes instead of almost 5 hours on a regular train.

The high-speed line has been dubbed Al Boraq, after a mythical winged creature that transported the prophets to heaven.
