Reader favourite 4×4’s, accessories and retailers
4×4 vehicles
Toyota predictably, dominates the market and minds of readers with 20% wanting a Land Cruiser though only 2% own one. Hilux and Fortuners are owned by 7% and 3% respectively. Land Rover Defender trails the Land Cruiser in desirability but is second most owned 4×4 along with Land Rover Discovery, both at 4%.
Roof Racks
Ownership reflects popularity with Thule 6%, Front Runner 5% and African Outback at 2% securing buyers money. 71% don’t own roof racks.
Awnings
Howling Moon (9%) squeaks past Eezi-Awn (8%) for Getaway reader’s love but Eezi-Awn at 4%, have been bought by twice as many people as Front Runner, Howling Moon and Front Runner both at 2%. 81% don’t own an awning.
Storage Systems (including drawers and roof boxes)
African Outback and Front Runner are tied in both popularity (both10%) and ownership (both 2%). Notably, 5% of readers chose custom or homebuilt storage systems. 87% don’t own a storage system.
Protective Coverings
Bullbars
ARB at 13% pips NudgeM by 1% for desirability but both are owned by 6% of respondents. 69% don’t have a bullbar.
Fitment Centre
4×4 Megaworld dominates both the hearts and credit cards of fitment centre visitors with 11% spending their money there, followed by LA Sport at 4%. Front Runner and Echo 4×4 both command 2% of the market. 72% don’t use a fitment centre.
Roof Top Tents (including trailer tents)
Even though Howling Moon came through as the most desirable (11%), they share the market with Echo both securing 2% of sales. 86% of respondents don’t own roof top tents.
Winches
Warn, owned by 4% of survey respondents, leads Ironman at 2%. 85% don’t own winches.
Canopies
Beekman canopies are both most desired (7%) and most owned (6%) by readers. 77% don’t own canopies.
Camp Fridge/Freezers
While 77% of respondents don’t own vehicle refrigeration, Engel is most desired (18%) followed by Campmaster (17%). Campmaster top the off-road refrigeration list of most purchased brand. Engel and National Luna trail in ownership by 8% and 4% respectively.
Camper Canopies
GPS
Garmin rules the GPS market both in your hearts and in your cars. TomTom comes a fairly distant second at 13%. At 5% quite few readers are using cellphones to navigate but only 1% say they like to do it this way.
Outdoor retailers
Cape Union Mart (at 40%) is streaks ahead of other stores (except Outdoor Warehouse (24%)) in popularity and is visited by 86% of Getaway readers. It is interesting to note that Makro, Game, and Sportsmans Warehouse scored poorly on popularity but are regularly frequented by you.
