Watch: Snake eagle eats puff adder alive
This rather grisly footage was captured by Graeme Mitchley on his way back to the Lower Sabie camp in Kruger National Park.
The sighting occurred in the late afternoon and Graeme was pleased that there were not too many cars around so that he could get a good view.
‘The puffadder had been slowly slithering across the road when it was attacked by the brown snake eagle. It was pretty gruesome to watch as the eagle began to eat and tear the snake apart while it was still alive,’ he said.
The head of the snake (which contains its venom glands) was left lying on the road as the bird flew off with the tail end in his beak to go finish his meal elsewhere.
