Ordinary peeps doing ‘crazy’ things

Posted by Ray Chaplin on 2 November 2010

The list of what I have been called is endless! Mad, stupid, brave, trouble seeker, inspiring, etc”¦ the list is endless. But I know that what I do makes me happy and sometimes inspires others to get out there and experience life.

So, when I meet fellow “nutcases” on the road or trail, I enjoy spending some time and sharing stories with them. The latest “crazy” that I ran into is none other than Tony Tractor. Yip, you guessed it, his name is Tony and he drives a tractor.

But no ordinary tractor! Oh no, that would be too simple. He is driving a stunning 1948 Ferguson!! And what a beauty she is. “I love tractors so I will “˜tractor’ myself along the road” he said regarding his interesting choice of transportation methods.

In 2006 Tony undertook a journey from Beitbridge to Cape Agulhas in South Africa to raise funds for the Midlands Crisis and Trauma Centre in Howick and to promote awareness for blood donations for the South African National Blood Services. With help from the South African National Blood Services and Midlands Crisis and Trauma Centre Tony survived being shot twice while trying to save a friend from armed robbers in 2002. To show his thanks and appreciation Tony embarked on this trip.

Now, in 2010, he’s on a mission again… this time raising awareness and support for people affected by violence and rape.

When asked why he was tackling such a journey, he answered: “I believe so strongly that women and child abuse is an issue that doesn’t receive the attention and effort that it deserves. Human well-being (mind, body and spirit) is a fundamental right and is critical for a well “˜functioning’ society. Ironically, while our constitution protects these rights, little action is being taken to address the abuse of these rights, which is eroding the functionality and moral values of our families and society. I can’t just sit here and do nothing about this.”

Imagine what society would be like if everyone stood up and took action like Tony instead of complaining!
