On our way out of Malawi, from the Lake of Stars festival in Mangochi, we stopped at a roadblock just before the Mozambican border. The policeman recognised us from our drive in, and asked us why we were leaving Malawi. We couldn’t think of a better reason than the fact that we had to return (sigh) to the office. In response, he offered to find us jobs AND put us up in his house. That’s Malawian friendliness for you.
We made the hard slog back home in two days: one day to Great Zimbabwe (16 hours and two harassed border crossings) and another back to Joburg (10 hours, sustained by toasted sarmies and coffee from Mike’s Kitchen outside Louis Trichardt).
Our trusty Mini returned us home safely, albeit with hippy hair and dirty feet. We did 4600 kms in 15 days without a scratch.
