Day 46: Slowly making Hartbeesfontein

Posted by Ray Chaplin on 21 February 2010

Despite being up at 6:30 am this morning, I just couldn’t get going. It felt like I had regained some energy, but every time I tried to move I just lost it. I ate breakfast and, again, that was a bad move… as it vanished again. Grrrrr…

I had coffee with Oom Willie and we chatted a bit, before moving inside and I parked off and watched some really dodgy TV programmes. But, I was resting my sick body and that was all that mattered.

But, after 24 hrs of being there I had to move – as if I didn’t move soon I’d be there another 24hrs and my timeline doesn’t allow for that. So I gathered my things and said thanks & farewell… before hitting the road, slowly.

I stuck to dry nutrition but soon grew bored and moved across to MuleBars… which was fine until I drank some Oros, which sent my body for a loop. My stomach felt like it was prepping to bungy jump… or was already but just hadn’t left the bridge yet. Damn! Discomfort cannot describe the pain, but I pressed on and stopped every few kilometres to fold over double and try relieve some pain.

With Hartbeesfontein in sight, I took my last break to refill bottles and get some more food out of Tootsie. I was taking strain by now, and just wanted to reach town so that I could get something ice cold and make progress out the other side…

But! Me passing a place with a bicycle as part of the garden decor just doesn’t happen, so I pulled in to chat with the folks at the Farmhouse B&B. An awesome garden and spectacular house, with a fantastic couple running it. Freda is a landscaper and Mike a dentist, and they bought they place a few years back for the peace and quiet.

After chatting a while and some cold water, they offered me a room for the night… which I just couldn’t refuse because I really ddn’t feel up to adding more to my 18 km for the day. Eish!

May tomorrow be a better day for distance…
