Contrary to my usual feeling, I’m loving the rain.
Woke up feeling quite weak and took a long time to get going. Not feeling too hungry but I can definitely notice that energy is low. Still not sleeping very well – will try an alternative hammock position tonight. Several people have moved to the beach, believing it’s more comfortable. I may try it in the coming days.
There’s some concern in the group about food supply, as it’s not been as easy as expected to find fish and edible plants. So Lisa and I investigated the palms behind our camp and found that both the growing tips and the palm hearts are edible, which should provide a good supplement. The hearts taste a bit like sugar cane.
There was quite a lot of activity – a group went up river and found good water and brought back bananas, and another group investigated the adjacent beach, but there was little to find. I rested in the shade in the afternoon and had a great chat with Maya and Lisa about various topics – very interesting. Then I began construction of a crab trap which I will complete tomorrow.
In the late afternoon there was a heavy downpour, very invigorating, and we collected about 20 litres of fresh rainwater, which I think was greatly appreciated by all. Certainly I think we will come to appreciate small things much more as a result of this experience, and stop taking them so easily for granted, as we do in normal life.
Nick caught a beautiful, brightly coloured fish with his throw net, and this with the bananas will make a decent evening meal. Three days done!
