Diving with cuttlefish in Bali

Posted by Rowan Watt Pringle on 3 May 2011

While completing my divemaster internship at Nautilus Diving Bali in Indonesia, I put together a couple of online promotional videos for the dive shop.

Check out my first attempt at underwater videography on Facebook. I filmed it last year with my Canon PowerShot D10, which can be taken to a depth of 10 m. The video features cuttlefish, one of the most mysterious and fascinating creatures in the sea. Cuttlefish have a highly evolved set of communication devices. They can change their colour and body shape for both camouflage and communication by using a complex system of pulsing chromatophores which affects the colour and polarisation of light as it reflects off their skin. They also assume various postures and make signals with their tentacles to communicate. Cuttlefish are believed to be the world’s most intelligent invertebrates.
