The Kilimanjaro Kit Diaries: Thermal underwear

Capestorm Inferno

This underwear keeps you warm and prevents you from overheating – a mysterious but most welcome ability. The tops double as long sleeved shirts because they manage not to look naff and underwearish (they’re charcoal) and they wick very well. The lightweight fabric is stretchy and soft and the cut is figure-hugging and fits comfortably under clothing without bagging or bunching.

Capestorm Furnace
Apparently, plenty of people wear this underwear as outerwear. I’ve been sporting the Furnace long-sleeved vest over cycling shirts for years, and some joggers use the leggings instead of tracksuit pants. This is completely understandable. Not only does the funky two-tone styling make them worth showing off, but they also provide excellent wicking.

On their own, they don’t provide much warmth – in fact, they’re better at keeping you cool – but cover them with another layer and things really start to heat up. On Kili, use one set as your base layer to keep warm on the summit (the top’s also good for sunny days under a t-shirt as it keeps off dust and sun). Use another set as pyjamas.
