The Kilimanjaro Kit Diaries: Thermal mattress

Thermal Comfort Light

Although your trekking company should provide you with foam mattresses as part of the camping equipment, you still need an additional thermal mattress for proper comfort and warmth. This thermal mattress offers really excellent value and is lightweight for its size: 183 x 51cm with 2,5cm of cushioning.

It’s made of tough, anti-slip rip-stop fabric and has a high volume valve, which we found made it easy to inflate and deflate. Apparently the interior has been given antimicrobial treatment, so it won’t get gungy or stinky. It comes with a stuff sack and a couple of repair patches (apply the same way you would a bicycle tyre patch), but if you use this mattress together with a foam mattress, you’re unlikely ever to need these.

Weight: 670g
RRP: R480
