The Kilimanjaro Kit Diaries: Sleeping bag liner

Posted by Alison Westwood on 22 September 2009

Sleeping bag liners extend the life of your sleeping bag by keeping them clean.

It’s also so much easier to wash a liner than a big down bag. But perhaps the best thing about liners is that they can increase the temperature range of your bag by several degrees. Compared with the price of a warmer down bag, they can be economical too.

Sea to Summit Silk Travel Liner
Now this is the way to travel: sleeping between silken sheets every night, even though you’re in a tent. This ripstop silk liner is fantastically light and compact – barely the size of a coffee cup – but can increase the warmth of your sleeping bag by 5?C. It’s machine washable and colourfast and has reinforced seams and a built-in pillowcase. What’s particularly nice about silk is that it has an almost magical ability to keep you at a comfortable temperature. Never too hot, never chilly. A top piece of kit well worth the price tag.

Sea to Summit Reactor
This compact thermal liner can increase the comfort range of a sleeping bag by up to 8?C and doubles as a warm weather sleeping bag used on its own. It’s made of Thermolite hollow-core fabric, which traps warm air but expels moisture, so no matter how warm you get inside it, you won’t feel clammy. It’s machine-washable and rolls easily into a compact travel bag.
