In the wake of our hugely successful winter issue of Getaway International, our new magazine covering international travel, we’ve just launched our summer 2012 edition. Getaway International is a magazine for South Africans who like to travel abroad and covers foreign destinations from a uniquely South African perspective. In the new issue, which went on sale on Monday 15 October 2012, we’ve gone far off the beaten track. Being brave enough to leave of your comfort zone and venture into parts of the world you’d never before dreamed of visiting, is one of the joys of travel. For newby international travellers, this might be as simple as booking your first ticket to London, or taking a whirlwind Contiki tour around Europe.
For more experienced adventurers, the challenge is to avoid the beaten path and find a destination that’s way off your normal radar. For me, just such an opportunity cropped up this year with the chance to join a 4×4 expedition through the ‘Stan’ countries – the southern states of the former USSR. From white-marble cities and gas craters to Islamic citadels and nomadic mountain camps, this journey ticked all the boxes of great adventure travel.
For Getaway photojournalist Sarah Duff, a similar adventure was her first trip to India. She tried to cram as much of the country as possible into five kaleidoscopic weeks. Sarah returned with her eyes out on stalks and unable to focus on anything other than booking her next ticket to Asia’s subcontinent.
Although this is a summer issue of Getaway International, with southern hemisphere offerings such as the best of Buenos Aires and African houseboating on the menu, we recognise that many of our readers head overseas during the Christmas vacation period. So we’ve included a number of exciting, northern-winter destinations: from the snowy heights of Switzerland and the glamour of New York to the ice of Sweden and the deserts of Oman.
So, get out there and buy yourself a copy of the adventure-packed summer edition of Getaway International! Copies will be on sale at selected Pick ‘n Pay, Exclusive Books, CNA, Spar and Woolworths stores across South Africa.
