Take a break at Thokozisa Lifestyle Centre in the Drakensberg

Posted by Lisa Johnston on 23 February 2012

When the kids start nagging and threaten to turn a peaceful drive in the mountains into a nightmare, it’s time to turn towards Thokozisa Lifestyle Centre. All manner of sibling rivalry will be forgotten once they discover the charms of the kids’ play area and its quirky animal sculptures. Adults, meanwhile, can shop to their hearts’ content and grab a coffee or a glass of wine at the restaurant.

On the R600 in the heart of the Drakensberg’s Champagne Valley, Thokozisa is a collective of small shops, a restaurant and tea garden clustered around a thatched central core, which houses the Central Berg Tourist Information Centre. Peppered with murals and amusing sculptures, it’s a lovely place to stretch your legs and stockpile gifts for yourself or loved ones.

The 15 specialty shops offer everything from gourmet deli foods, wines and gemstones and crystals to health products, hand-woven rugs and Himalayan clothing and accessories. Hikers who’ve worn out their soles on the berg’s spiny ridge can pick up a new pair of boots and other paraphernalia or book a massage at the spa to ease their aching muscles.

Centrally located, it’s not far from Winterton and makes an excellent pit stop for gentle ambling through the mountain paradise.
